Olives, orange juice and coconut - great food hacks

Think about squeezing an orange, scaling a fish or pitting olives – those who like to work in the kitchen know one or the other hurdle in preparing a wide variety of foods all too well.

Here are five solutions to annoying kitchen problems that are now a thing of the past.

1. Squeeze the juice out of an orange

Freshly squeezed orange juice is the icing on the cake of a good breakfast. If you don’t have a juicer at home, however, you don’t have to go without the fruity drink at daybreak. Since squeezing out by hand alone does not fill a glass with fruit juice, simply put an empty glass upside down in a bowl and squeeze the fruit on the bottom of the glass with slight rotating movements, this is how you get the most fruit juice out of the orange.

2. Remove the pulp from a coconut

A coconut brings that holiday feeling to the table, but loosening the pulp from the coconut can be a real ordeal. But you can save yourself tearing your hair next time. Simply place the halved coconut on a flame for 30 seconds and then immerse it in cold water – the pulp can be removed perfectly from the coconut.

3. Remove fish scales

Calling removing fish scales fumbling is definitely not an understatement. This annoying task can also be done very quickly and easily. Simply cut a large carrot at an angle and run it over the fish against the direction of the scales growth – you will see that the scales virtually detach themselves.

4. Finely chop the cabbage

Chopping a cabbage into small pieces can take what feels like an eternity, because there is still a piece that is too large that has not yet been hit by the knife. The solution is not to chop the cabbage with a knife. Just take a stainless steel mug and use it to chop your cabbage, this is the fastest and most effective method.

5. Stone the olives

Have you ever succeeded in pitting olives without crushing the fruit yourself? If your answer to this question is “no”, here’s the solution: Simply pitting the olives with a funnel – brilliant, isn’t it?

These 5 hacks are good proof that you don’t need to have all of the kitchen utensils at home, such as a juicer or a stoner. With our tricks for everything to do with food, you not only save time and nerves, but also money, the next time you start pitting olives, squeezing oranges or removing the pulp from a coconut.
